This new site was a bit of an unknown quantity
prior to the event leaving the event officials with a bit of a headache when
it came to the format of Sunday's event.The site's size made it difficult
to run an orienteering challenge like Weardale whilst, at the same time,
it would be difficult to get enough sections for a full trial. In the end
it was decided that we would make it half and half with 6 trials sections
and 12 orienteering punches.
So, on Saturday, while those who came for the
driving day explored all the holes, mud runs and hills that the site has
to offer Matthew and Tim set out the trials sections and placed the punches.
One of the punches was, as it turns out, later moved from the side of the
pond to it's centre by some local kids... kudos (as well as wet feet) to
those competitors who were game enough to attempt the punch in it's new position
!
The event format seemed to work well and is one
that we may well use again in the future. Thanks to all those who officiated
and marshalled the event, particularly Richard Spencer who spent all day
parked in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of a heatwave, checking the
orienteering competitors in and out of the control area.
